3.
WRITING A SCIENTIFIC ARTICLE (TAALCENTRUM VU)
Aim
You may not have any difficulty reading academic publications in English, but can you write articles with the same ease? Our specialized training course, ‘Writing a scientific article', is specifically geared toward researchers. Upon completing the course, you will be better able to write texts that are publishable in the leading English-language journals within your field. The language of tuition is English.
The ‘Writing a scientific article' course is intended for researchers who are non-native speakers of English and who are writing a PhD in English or preparing an article for publication in an English-language journal. We do not advise enrolling for this course unless you have some prior writing experience and have begun writing an article.
Contents
The course combines theory and practice with the focus on your own article. You will receive feedback on different areas of your article from the group trainer and the group participants (peer review). You should expect to spend between four and six hours on self-study per session. Topics that will be covered include:
- Different types of scientific texts and their specific textual features; the importance of the introduction and conclusion
- The main elements of scientific texts: summary and abstract; your research goals; clear, concise description of your research design and methods; list of works cited in your article
- Correct paragraph style in English
- Hot-button issues: How to express personal opinions? Should you use ‘we' or ‘I'?
- Sentence structure: foregrounding and backgrounding, word order patterns, conditional clauses, definite and indefinite articles, adverbs, prepositional phrases and verb tenses.
