4. PRESENTING IN ENGLISH (TAALCENTRUM VU)
Aim
During this training course, you will learn how to give effective presentations, including PowerPoint, in English. You will be introduced to various presentation techniques suited to both large and small audiences and will learn to talk in a compelling and informative way about your research. The language of the tuition is English.
This course is designed for researchers who wish to give English-language presentations on their research. We would not advise enrolling for this course unless you have already prepared a topic for presentation.
Contents
Throughout the course, you will give a number of presentations. These presentations will be videotaped and furnished with a detailed written analysis. You will receive a DVD with your presentations after the course has finished. Topics that will be covered include:
- Structuring your argument
- Improving your fluency and expanding your vocabulary:
• The language of presentations (introducing, emphasizing, paraphrasing, concluding, giving examples, comparing and contrasting, cause and effect, moving on, summing up)
• The language of figures and statistics
- Revising grammar rules likes tenses, modality (could, would, should) and sentence structure
- Improving your pronunciation and intonation
- Answering questions from the audience
- Improving your body language
